Why Asbestos Matters So Much in Schools
A large proportion of UK school buildings date from the 1950s to the 1980s, when builders used asbestos routinely in ceiling tiles, insulation boards, pipe lagging, window panels and floor tiles. The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 places a legal duty on whoever is responsible for maintaining school premises, typically the academy trust, governing body or local authority, to know where asbestos is, keep it in safe condition and manage it actively.
That starts with an up-to-date asbestos management survey. If your register is old, incomplete or missing, we bring it up to standard quickly and explain the findings in plain English.
Surveys, Removal and Encapsulation Under One Roof
Every school building is different, so we match the approach to the situation rather than pushing one solution:
- Surveys. Management surveys for day-to-day compliance, plus refurbishment and demolition surveys before building works, extensions or classroom refits.
- Removal. Where materials are damaged or works demand it, we remove them safely and dispose of the waste through Environment Agency permitted facilities, with consignment notes for your records.
- Encapsulation. Where asbestos is in sound condition, sealing it in place often protects pupils and staff just as effectively as removal, at a fraction of the cost and disruption. We assess each case honestly and recommend removal only when it is genuinely the right answer.
Encapsulation done well means a safer building without closing classrooms. We tell schools when it is the smarter option, even though removal would earn us more.
