Welcome to Harts Waste, your trusted asbestos removal company. We specialise in the removal of asbestos-containing materials from residential, industrial, and commercial properties.
Artex (Artex LTD), a brand name for a textured coating used on ceilings and walls, often contains asbestos fibres, which pose significant health risks.
Whether dealing with Artex coatings in a residential or commercial property, safely removing Artex is crucial to ensure a healthy and safe environment.
Artex (Artex LTD) is a decorative coating in older homes and buildings.
This textured coating, famous for its decorative appeal, was first introduced in 1935 and has since become a well-known product for containing asbestos.
It was widely applied to ceilings and walls to create a smooth surface and hide imperfections.
However, many Artex coatings contain asbestos fibres, specifically chrysotile asbestos, also known as white asbestos.
Asbestos-containing Artex poses a severe health risk in large or small amounts.
The asbestos fibres present in Artex can be hazardous when disturbed, releasing dangerous dust particles into the air.
Tradespeople and homeowners must be cautious as exposure to these fibres can lead to severe respiratory diseases, including asbestosis and mesothelioma.
If you think you have found the presence of asbestos - Do not panic!
Like all asbestos materials, the removal of artex is no different. It is a hazardous material, and the only way it should be removed is by following the legal requirements.
This gives you peace of mind as the customer knows it has been removed safely and for the non-licensed or licensed contractors carrying out the removal.
DIY removal is not recommended due to the severe health risks involved.
Artex ceiling removal should only be performed by qualified professionals.
At Harts Waste, we do not cut corners. We consistently implement strict safety measures for the best results, ensuring the process is carried out safely and efficiently.
Regardless of its severity, we remove asbestos according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines.
There are five main methods for removing Artex from your ceiling, each with unique considerations. No matter which method you choose, hiring a professional is recommended for a safe and effective outcome.
With chemical removal, we soften the Artex, making it easy to scrape off and expose the original plasterboard. This plasterboard is then ready for new ceiling coverings or coatings. Chemical removal is ideal for smaller areas, as it minimizes dust and is a safe way to tackle Artex-containing asbestos.
This method involves attaching a plasterboard over the original Artex ceiling, followed by several layers of plaster skim to create a smooth plaster ceiling. It’s an effective way to cover Artex without disturbing it, especially if there’s concern about the spread of asbestos.
Instead of using plasterboard, some ceilings can be treated by sealing the Artex with PVA before applying a fresh plaster skim layer. This option may be the best way to achieve a seamless finish without complete removal.
A wallpaper steamer can also be used to soften the Artex, allowing for easy scraping. This process works well on smaller, manageable work areas. However, using protective equipment is essential, especially if the Artex may contain asbestos.
The best option is always a complete removal, which entails removing both the Artex and the original plasterboard. This is a labour-intensive method, and if the Artex contains asbestos, it requires special disposal as hazardous waste.
We conduct a thorough survey to identify any asbestos exposure and type of asbestos or asbestos-containing Artex we are dealing with.
Based on the survey, we choose the best course of action for the removal work of the asbestos.
We use various removal methods, such as wet removal and encapsulation, to ensure minimal disruption and maximum safety.
After removal, we perform comprehensive cleanup and air monitoring to ensure no asbestos fibres remain.
Important Note: Not all asbestos Artex removals require the same process. Sometimes, surveys or air monitoring may not be necessary, so we will not carry them out. Occasionally, we may not even need to remove the asbestos, saving you money and avoiding the artex removal costs.
